Welcome to the Psychology of Women Section
POWS was set up as a subsection of the British Psychological Society in 1988 to:
- Bring together everyone with an interest in the Psychology of Women
- Provide a forum for the Psychology of Women in research, teaching, and professional practice
- Increase awareness and action around gender and inequality issues within the British Psychological Society, Psychology preofession, and the teaching of Psychology.
POWS is open to all members of the British Psychological Society. The majority of members are women who work in the various areas within psychology:clinical, educational,social, developmental, health, occupational, and lesbian & gay psychology.

The POWS Committee recently nominated Dr Nimisha Patel for the British Psychological Society, Distinguished Professional Practice Award for all her outstanding work around law, social justice and psychology.
Her research has led to the development of tools and resources to identify and address the psychology, legal implications and consequences of torture, war, rape, state-sanctioned violence and racism. She has developed a resource pack for trainers in clinical psychology (Patel, 2000) and clinical, ethical and practice guidelines for health and legal professionals involved in service provision for refugee torture survivors.
We are delighted to announce that Dr Patel's nomination was successful with the BPS just recently confirming the Award; responding to her extensive body of prestigious and vitally important work.
This is indeed a great achievement and one that we are certain the entire membership will want to celebrate.
Congratulations to Dr Patel for the Award and this wonderful and highly deserved recognition of her contribution and impact in what is a critical area of psychological practice.
